Protecting The Family In A Flood

If you live anywhere that is at risk of hurricanes, then it is important that you know how to protect your home and your family from the level of severe damage that can be the result of heavy flooding. It is a good idea to follow this list of tips to make sure you stay safe in the event of severe weather conditions.

It is absolutely essential that you have a well stocked emergency kit on hand all year round. You should include flash lights, a portable battery operated radio, batteries, non perishable foods, bottled water, a first aid kit and medication. There is no point in waiting until a storm warning is issued, as the stores will sell out of those items quickly. It is much better to be prepared well in advance and never need it than to be caught short at the last minute. We keep ours in a holdall bag in the closet by the door so it can be grabbed if we need to go in a hurry.

Another precaution to take is to ensure you take out flood insurance if you are living in a high risk area. The policy documents and all other important paperwork should be kept in a water and fire proof lock box. It is important to keep your rain gutters totally free of debris as this will help keep sediment levels under control if a flood does occur. Hurricanes can bring massive amounts of rain and so it is essential to have good drainage as this will minimize the flooding. Keeping trees and shrubbery trimmed back to stop them being blown down and causing unnecessary damage. Likewise, outdoor furniture and storage units are properly secured to stop them being blown around.

I think above all else, you just have to be prepared! If you have a plan in place you can get to safety much faster! Stay safe guys!
