As a parent you may have discovered that your teenager is thinking
about a body modification? It can be awkward to reach an agreement on
the topic, but at the end of the day, as a parent it may be more
sensible to allow it and to make sure it is done properly, than to
risk them going off and getting it done behind your back.
There are some very real risks when it comes to body modifications,
such as piercings, and there can be complications, however, take the
necessary precautions and your teenager can be the proud owner of a
healthy body piercing.
So what are the complications that can arise from a body piercing?
Firstly infection can arise when a piercing is not properly cared for
and this can be extremely dangerous and can even lead to blood
poisoning.
Then there are allergic reactions, certain people can be allergic to
certain kinds of metal, but they will not always be aware of this
until after they have the piercing put in place. Allergic reactions
to metal can cause significant swellings, or a rash to appear and in
extreme cases can cause breathing difficulties and even
hospitalization.
The less common problems can be caused by nerve damage or excessive
bleeding, if the piercing is not completed to a good enough standard.
Then there is the risk to health posed by cross contamination, this
happens when needles are reused and not sterilized correctly by the
person doing the piercing.
It is things such as the above that your teenager needs to be fully
aware of, if they are considering getting a body modification in the
near future.
To avoid these circumstances arising then you will need to do some
research into your local body modification providers. Any decent body
modification provider will have references of people who they have
completed body modification on, as well as having up to date health
and safety certificates, and a clean working environment.
